What Is Appleskin™ Vegan Leather? A Complete Guide

What Is Appleskin™ Vegan Leather? A Complete Guide

Appleskin™ vegan leather is a bio-based vegan leather made from apple pomace, the pulp and skins left over after apples are pressed for cider, juice and compote. It is soft, hardwearing and cruelty-free, and we use it in all of our Mary Wyatt belts and harnesses.

What is Appleskin™ made from?

Appleskin™ is made from apple pomace and a recycled core. Each layer has a different job:

  • The surface: apple pomace discarded by the beverage industry, including cider, juice and compote production.
  • The inner core: wood pulp and recycled plastic bottles, which give the material its strength and structure.

That makes it a bio-based and recycled blend, not a fully plant-based material. The material is produced by Vegatex and is an eco-friendly alternative to leather that is both soft and hardwearing.

How does Appleskin™ look, feel and wear?

Appleskin™ is both soft and hardwearing, and the version we use is premium and ultra-heavy. That weight matters for belts because they take daily stress at the buckle, the holes and the hardware.

What that means in practice:

  • Weight and structure: the heavy strap is designed to carry chains, studs and O-rings.
  • Hand-feel: soft to the touch and hardwearing.
  • Hardware-friendly: it carries heavy details well, from the Axis's detachable chain to the Dev's four rows of pyramid studs.
  • Finish: it carries embossed branding, as on the Axis's branded strap end and the Havoc's embossed design.

How to care for your Mary Wyatt Appleskin™ Vegan Leather Belt:

Wipe it with a damp cloth, dry it flat, and keep it away from heat. Always check the care label on your belt first; these steps are general guidance for all vegan leather accessories.

  1. Wipe, don't soak. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth for marks and dust. Avoid submerging the belt or leaving it wet.
  2. Dry naturally. Let it air dry away from radiators, hairdryers and direct sun.
  3. Skip harsh cleaners. Solvents and strong detergents can damage the surface of any faux leather.
  4. Store it flat or loosely rolled. Tight folding can leave creases at the same point every time.
  5. Look after the hardware. Wipe chains, studs and O-rings dry after contact with water. Chains are detachable and can be removed and switched between belts.
